Erastus Johnson nasceu no dia de hoje, 20 de abril de 1826, num campo de exploração de madeira na margem oeste do rio Penobscot em Township, nos E. U.A. Erastus Johnson, escritor de hinos sacros norte-americano. Aluno vitalício da Bíblia, Johnson, aos 47 anos de idade, escreveu o hino, "O Sometimes the Shadows are Deep" (também conhecido como "The Rock That Is Higher Than I") . Faleceu a 16 de junho de 1909.
