Charles Albert Tindley (7 de Julho de1851 - 26 de Julho de1933)
Tindley é conhecido como um dos “pais do American Gospel.”
O filho de escravos, aprendeu a ler e a escrever sozinho aos 17 anos.
Ele era um jovem cocheiro, trabalhando como porteiro enquanto frequentava a escola à noite, e tirava o seu grau em teologia num curso de correspondência.
Em 1902, ele tornou-se pastor Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church, em Filadélfia, Pensilvânia, a igreja onde ele teve anteriormente tinha sido o porteiro.
Quando Tindley faleceu, a sua igreja tinha 12 500 membros. Em sua memória a igreja mudou o nome para The Tindley Temple United Methodist Church in Philadelphia.
O hino de Tindley é “I’ll Overcome Some Day” foi a base para o hino de direitos civis americanos “We Shall Overcome,” popularizados nos anos sessenta do século vinte.
